Covering 46% of the ACT, Namadgi National Park is a vast wilderness of alpine meadows, granite peaks and temperate woodland that begins at the edge of Canberra's suburbs. Free entry and excellent for bushwalking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing in winter. The Yankee Hat walk (8km return) leads to significant Aboriginal rock art. The Visitor Centre at Tharwa has excellent interpretive displays. A genuine wilderness experience within an hour of the city.
